NZ 3

Thursday November 18th
We got back on the bus and drove a full day again. We arrived in Fox Glacier that evening, had dinner and just hung out for a bit. I ended up talking to the owner of the bar inside the hotel for a bit. Turns out that he has toured all around the United States! He had experienced all sorts of places and adventures that were so lovely to hear about!

Friday November 19
That morning we woke up and did a half day hike up the Fox Glacier. It was cold and rainy, but cool all the same! They told us that it rains over 200 days a year so we aren’t in the minority with getting rained on. It was over 500 stairs through the cool temperate rainforest just to get up to the glacier. We finally got up there and put metal spikes on our shoes before stepping onto the glacier. We walked on the actual glacier for about an hour through the many stairs that they had carved in the ice. Because the glacier is always melting and always changing, they have to carve the steps into the glacier every day. Our guide informed us that it takes roughly 4 hours to get all of the steps into the glacier and we were there by 10 so clearly they were up early to get started! I could not believe how much ice there was! It goes on for farther than the eye can see up into the mountains. It is receding constantly through as the temperature in the area increases.

After the half day walk we took the rest of the day to get to our next destination, Flock Hill Sheep Station. The station is a working sheep station so they have many animals in which they do use for various purposes. They have sheep, cows, horses, and sheep dogs. When we arrived there we took a bit of a walk around the place and saw whatever it is we could find. We pretty much only saw horses that afternoon which was ok; we knew we would find more things tomorrow. They made us quite the delicious dinner, of course it included lamb! That night we just hung out around the station doing some more bonding, as there was again not too much other stuff going on.
